Imam Enrique A. Rasheed was born January 2, 1953 in Oakland, California. Rasheed embraced the religion of Al-Islam in 1979. He performed his first pilgrimage to Mecca in 1980. After embracing Al-Islam, in Oakland, CA, he studied The Holy Quran and the Arabic language under the direct instruction of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed. In February 1984, Rasheed became the first Muslim Chaplain to be hired at Folsom State Prison (Folsom, CA). In 1987 he received a scholarship to Khartoum, Sudan to participate in a one year Arabic intensive program at the African Islamic Center (now known as the International University of Africa). After completing his studies in Sudan, he returned to Northern California and continued to work as an Imam and Muslim Chaplain within several state prisons.
Imam Enrique A. Rasheed has 30 years of experience in the California State Prison system as a Muslim Chaplain, in addition to several decades of state and national interfaith work. Following the example of his teachers and mentors, Rasheed continues to remain a student and is a candidate for the Masters of Divinity degree program in Islamic Chaplaincy at Bayan Claremont. Additionally, Rasheed currently serves as a Muslim Chaplain in San Luis Obispo, CA. He is married and has three daughters, one son, five grandchildren (with one on the way, insha’Allah).
